Kaiserslautern
One night is enough for the centre; base here only if you want the Palatinate Forest on foot or you are tied to the nearby US bases.
Kaiserslautern is a working town of about 100,000 in Rhineland-Palatinate, nicknamed K-Town, with a large American military presence at nearby Ramstein and Landstuhl. The centre holds a small cluster of sights — the Stiftskirche, the Casimir castle ruins, the Japanese Garden and the Gartenschau — and the Palatinate Forest starts a short walk from the middle of town. Most travellers pass through on the train between Mannheim and Saarbrücken, or use it as a cheap, quiet base for the forest, the wine villages and day trips to Heidelberg or Speyer.

Get around
The centre is small enough to walk. City buses run from the Hbf and cost €1.90 per ride from the driver; day and three-day tickets exist. Bikes are a good option — most streets have lanes — but some streets are steep. Rental bikes are available from the central station, about €15/day (€9 reduced).
