Currarong

Go for 2 nights if you want a quiet beach village with walks from the door; skip it if you need cafés, nightlife or a bus you can rely on.

Currarong is a small Shoalhaven village of about 450 people on the Beecroft Peninsula, 30 minutes by car from Nowra and roughly three hours from Sydney. It is a self-catering beach base: a general store, a bowling club, holiday houses and walking tracks to beaches and rock platforms. There is no train, and the weekday bus runs only twice a day, so a car changes what you can do here.

  • Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
  • Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
  • Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
  • Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
  • Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
  • Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
  • Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.

Getting around

Walk. The village is small and mostly foot-pathed, with a footbridge over Currarong Creek. Parking is roadside only except at the beach and the bowling club, and streets near the shops jam up in peak season. A car is needed for Jervis Bay, Nowra and the wider peninsula.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet, low-crime village; the real risks are surf and rock platforms, unsealed or dark roads at night, and bushfire weather in summer. Check fire danger ratings before you drive in.
  • No train and no useful daily bus: Stewarts Coaches runs into Currarong twice a day on weekdays only (check the current timetable).
  • Holiday-house prices spike hard in December and January; book months ahead or come outside school holidays.
  • Mobile coverage and wi-fi can be patchy in the village; download maps and tickets before you arrive.
  • Beach and rock-platform swimming is unpatrolled: check conditions and never turn your back on the ocean.
