Currarong
Go for 2 nights if you want a quiet beach village with walks from the door; skip it if you need cafés, nightlife or a bus you can rely on.
Currarong is a small Shoalhaven village of about 450 people on the Beecroft Peninsula, 30 minutes by car from Nowra and roughly three hours from Sydney. It is a self-catering beach base: a general store, a bowling club, holiday houses and walking tracks to beaches and rock platforms. There is no train, and the weekday bus runs only twice a day, so a car changes what you can do here.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- No train and no useful daily bus: Stewarts Coaches runs into Currarong twice a day on weekdays only (check the current timetable).
- Holiday-house prices spike hard in December and January; book months ahead or come outside school holidays.
- Mobile coverage and wi-fi can be patchy in the village; download maps and tickets before you arrive.
- Beach and rock-platform swimming is unpatrolled: check conditions and never turn your back on the ocean.
A quiet, low-crime village; the real risks are surf and rock platforms, unsealed or dark roads at night, and bushfire weather in summer. Check fire danger ratings before you drive in.
