Van sits on the eastern shore of Lake Van, 1,640 m up and close to the Iranian border. It is a base for Urartian and Armenian sites, not a resort: the lake is hypersaline and fish-free, the old city was destroyed in 1915 and by earthquakes, and the sights are spread along the shore. Two nights covers the city and Akdamar; three lets you add Çavuştepe or Hoşap.

Getting around

Dolmuşes and taxis cover everything beyond walking distance; a dolmuş ride cost about 20 TL in 2025. For the castle take a dolmuş signed "Kale", get out at the castle fence and walk the last 1 km west to the entrance. Dolmuşes marked "Hava Alanı" run to the airport from near Hotel Akdamar on Kazım Karabekir Cd, about 15 min. Drivers seldom take cards: carry small lira notes.

Church of the Holy Cross, daily 08:00–17:00, €12 for foreign visitors. Go early: the crossing and the island fill up by midday.

8th-century BC Urartian acropolis with cuneiform inscriptions; open 24 hours and free, but there is no signage.

Hoşap Castle

The 1643 castle was temporarily closed; the 1671 three-arch bridge below is visible from the road either way. Check before you go.

Muradiye Waterfalls and Devil's Bridge

A 40 m-wide fall dropping 20 m, and a 19th-century single-arch bridge 2 km south. Parking 200 TL. In harsh winters the fall freezes.

Tatvan and Mount Nemrut

The western lake shore, the Ahlat tombs and the Nemrut crater lake need a night, not a day return.

Doğubayazıt

Watch out

Safety

Van is a normal Turkish provincial city and the tourist core is calm; the real risks are winter roads, earthquakes and the long distances between sights. Carry small lira notes, and check the security situation before any travel near the Iranian border.
  • The region sits on an active fault line: earthquakes are not uncommon. Know your exit route in any building.
  • Winter snow closes the D300 and D975 mountain sections; buses are the snowploughs' priority, not you.
  • The Iran border at Kapıköy/Razi, 100 km away, has no public transport across it: go via Doğubayazıt and Bazargan instead.
  • The lake water is hypersaline and stings the eyes; swimming is not a reason to come.
  • Some lakeside monasteries (Ktuts, Lim) need a summer boat trip or are out of range from Van: check locally before setting out.
