Van
Give Van 2 nights: one full day for the castle and museum, one for Akdamar Island. Skip it if you want beaches or nightlife.
Van sits on the eastern shore of Lake Van, 1,640 m up and close to the Iranian border. It is a base for Urartian and Armenian sites, not a resort: the lake is hypersaline and fish-free, the old city was destroyed in 1915 and by earthquakes, and the sights are spread along the shore. Two nights covers the city and Akdamar; three lets you add Çavuştepe or Hoşap.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Merhaba' (hello) or 'Selamün aleyküm' in conservative areas; cheek kisses between friends of the same sex; avoid: Offering a hand to a conservative woman first — wait for hers
- Mosques: Covered clothing, headscarf for women, shoes in hand, quiet voice; avoid: Walking in front of people praying; visiting during Friday midday prayer
- Hospitality: Accept tea or at least a sip; bring sweets or pastries to a home; avoid: Refusing food repeatedly; showing the soles of your feet
- Politics and history: Listen; let hosts raise it; avoid: Opinions on Atatürk, the Kurdish issue, Armenia or Cyprus with people you just met
- Ramadan: Eat discreetly in conservative towns during the day; avoid: Eating, drinking or smoking in front of fasting people in small towns
- Gestures: A slight upward head nod with a tut means 'no'; avoid: The OK hand sign (can be read as rude) and a thumb between fingers
- Dress in town: Shorts are fine in Istanbul and resorts; longer clothes in the interior and east; avoid: Swimwear away from the beach
- Names: First name plus Bey (men) or Hanım (women): 'Ahmet Bey'; avoid: Using the surname alone
Scams and watch-outs
- The region sits on an active fault line: earthquakes are not uncommon. Know your exit route in any building.
- Winter snow closes the D300 and D975 mountain sections; buses are the snowploughs' priority, not you.
- The Iran border at Kapıköy/Razi, 100 km away, has no public transport across it: go via Doğubayazıt and Bazargan instead.
- The lake water is hypersaline and stings the eyes; swimming is not a reason to come.
- Some lakeside monasteries (Ktuts, Lim) need a summer boat trip or are out of range from Van: check locally before setting out.
Van is a normal Turkish provincial city and the tourist core is calm; the real risks are winter roads, earthquakes and the long distances between sights. Carry small lira notes, and check the security situation before any travel near the Iranian border.
