Taxila is a UNESCO World Heritage archaeological zone about 35 km from Islamabad, spread over 20–25 km² of Gandharan stupas, monasteries and three buried cities. Almost nobody sleeps here: you hire a car or taxi for a day, buy separate tickets at the museum, and work through the sites in a loop. Two days if you want the northern sites properly.

Getting around

Sites are 2–7 km apart with little shade: hire a car with driver for the day. A taxi for the main sites runs about Rs 2,000 and an auto-rickshaw about Rs 1,000 (2026 estimate, check — fares move with fuel prices). Tangas (horse carts) still work the museum area. Walking between sites is possible but slow and hot.

Watch out

Safety

The archaeological zone is calm and heavily visited by Pakistani school groups; the risks are heat, traffic on the N-5 and unlicensed guides. Government advice for Pakistan is split by region — check your own foreign ministry's current line before you travel.
  • Self-appointed guides at each site push for tips; a firm "no thanks" works.
  • Trinket and fake-coin sellers cluster at Sirkap and Jaulian.
  • Tickets are sold separately at the museum for the museum, Dharmarajika, Sirkap and Mohra Moradu; Jaulian is in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and may need its own ticket — where to buy it is check.
  • Carry cash: card payment is not reliable at ticket counters.
  • Summer heat is the real hazard — start at opening, carry 2 L of water per person.
