Hasselt is the capital of Limburg, a compact car-free centre with a jenever (gin) museum, a UNESCO-listed beguinage and a strong café and shopping scene. It is 1 h from Brussels by train and works as a one-night stop or a day trip from Antwerp or Leuven, with Genk, Tongeren and Sint-Truiden within 30 minutes.

The centre is car-free and walkable end to end in about 20 minutes. City buses cost €1 per trip with a Hasseltpas bought in advance, free for under-19s; without the pass you pay the normal De Lijn fare. Trains and regional buses leave from Hasselt station.

Watch out

Safety

Hasselt is a low-risk city; the real issues are pickpockets around the Grote Markt on festival nights, bicycles in the car-free centre, and wet cobbles. Emergency number is 112.
  • The €1 (≈ US$2) city bus fare needs a Hasseltpas bought before you board, and both stops must be inside Hasselt.
  • Some museums close on Mondays and public holidays: check the official site before you go.
  • Pukkelpop is held in mid-August near Hasselt: beds and trains sell out that week.
  • Belgian 'priority to the right' at unmarked junctions catches drivers out.
