Szob is a small Danube Bend town of about 2,800 people on the Slovak border, first mentioned in 1280 and made a town in 2000. It is a rail and ferry junction, not a sightseeing destination: most travellers pass through on the way to Visegrád, Esztergom or the Börzsöny hills. One night is enough, and a half-day works if you only want the river and the narrow-gauge railway.

No local public transport. The town is small enough to walk; regional Volánbusz coaches and the MÁV train link the villages. The narrow-gauge forest railway runs to Nagybörzsöny on selected days from mid-March to early November.

Safety

Szob is a quiet small town and feels safe; the real risks are the river current, unlit roads at night and the lack of English outside the railway and museum.
  • The Szob–Nagybörzsöny forest railway runs only on Saturdays, Sundays and some Fridays between mid-March and early November; check the operator before you plan a day around it.
  • The Pilismarót car ferry runs April–October only, roughly hourly from morning to early evening; no winter service.
  • The Börzsöny Museum was under renovation in late 2025; confirm it is open before travelling for it.
  • English is limited outside the railway and museum; a few Hungarian phrases help.
