Nogales sits on the US–Mexico line, 100 km south of Tucson down I-19, and the border runs through the middle of town. The Arizona side is a small, walkable historic core of early-1900s storefronts, one good regional museum and a working port of entry. Almost nobody needs more than a night here, and many travellers use it only to park and walk across.

Getting around

The historic core and the pedestrian border crossing are walkable in 10–15 minutes. Everything else — Ruby, Peña Blanca Lake, Tumacácori, Rio Rico — needs a car; rental desks are on Grand Avenue and Mariposa Road. I-19 is the only fast road north to Tucson.

Watch out

Safety

The Arizona side is a small, quiet town and normal precautions cover it. The real risk sits on the Mexican side of the line: check the current US advisory for Sonora, cross on foot in daylight, and keep phones and jewellery out of sight.
  • Crossing into Sonora: check the current US State Department advisory for Sonora before you go, travel by day, stay on the main toll road (México 15) and keep valuables out of sight.
  • US citizens need a passport or passport card to re-enter; other nationalities need the right US entry document — check before you cross.
  • Summer heat and monsoon storms: June–September afternoons are punishing and flash flooding closes dirt roads.
  • The Mexican side is a separate city (Heroica Nogales) with its own rules, currency and phone network — your US plan may not cover it.
