Motueka

Base here 2 nights for Abel Tasman: it is the cheapest bed near the park gate, 20 min from Marahau and 15 min from Kaiteriteri.

Motueka is a working orchard town of about 8,000 people on the Motueka River, and the closest town to both Abel Tasman and Kahurangi national parks. Travellers use it as a bed base and a supermarket stop rather than a sightseeing town: the beaches at Kaiteriteri and Marahau, the coastal track and the kayak launches are all 15–30 minutes away by car. It also has one of the country's highest sunshine-hour counts, so rain plans matter less here than on the West Coast.

  • Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
  • Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
  • Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
  • New Zealand ↗Visa-waiver visitors need an NZeTA (with the tourism levy) before travel, including many transit passengers; others need a visa. Apply only through Immigration New Zealand or its official app, and check the rules for your passport.
  • New Zealand ↗Declare all food, plant and animal products, and used outdoor gear such as hiking boots and tents, on the New Zealand Traveller Declaration; undeclared risk items bring instant fines.
  • New Zealand ↗Drive on the left; give way as signed at one-lane bridges; an English-language licence or one with an approved translation or International Driving Permit is required.
  • New Zealand ↗Freedom camping is restricted: sleep in a vehicle only where signed as allowed, and in many places only in certified self-contained vehicles.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: buses run to Nelson, Richmond, Mapua, Kaiteriteri and Marahau but are thin and not built around early park departures. Motueka Airport is a small airfield south of town. Distances are short — Nelson 40 min, Richmond 30 min, Takaka 55 min — but the Takaka Hill road is winding.

Kaiteriteri Beach

go

Door to door: About 20 min

Drive SH60 north, about 15 min

Golden sand and calm water; go early in Jan–Feb for parking.

Marahau and the Abel Tasman coast

go

Door to door: About 30 min

Drive about 20 min, or a shuttle from town

Water taxis and kayak launches leave from here; book ahead in summer.

Door to door: About 45 min

Drive SH60, about 40 min

Bigger city for flights, restaurants and the Saturday market.

Mapua

go

Door to door: About 25 min

Drive SH60 south, about 20 min

Wharf, cafés and the ferry to Rabbit Island.

Door to door: About 2 h

Drive via SH6 and SH63, about 1 h 45 min

Too far for a comfortable return day; sleep one night.

Murchison

caution

Door to door: About 1.5 h

Drive SH60 and SH6, about 1 h 30 min

A long return day; better as a stop on the way to the West Coast.

Marahau

20 min north at the park boundary; best for early water-taxi and kayak departures.

Watch out

Safety

A small, quiet town and one of the safer bases in the region. The real risks are the sea and the bush: cold water, strong currents at some beaches, and weather that changes fast on the Abel Tasman coast. Tell someone your plan before a solo tramp.
  • No public transport to most trailheads: arrange a shuttle or water taxi before you arrive.
  • Abel Tasman coastal track huts and campsites book out months ahead in summer; check DOC.
  • Sandflies at Marahau and along the coast; bring repellent.
  • One-lane bridges and logging or orchard trucks on SH60: pull over and let them pass.

This is a basic guide: no airport-to-bed contract, walking clusters or day plans are published for Motueka. Airport, fare and schedule details are unverified; check the operators before you fly.

What we know, and what is coming

On this page

  1. Best months: Nov–Apr; Feb–Mar for the warmest, driest stretch · avoid Jun–Aug (wet, quiet, many operators closed) · month by month →
  2. 2 airports and 3 areas to sleep in
  3. Weather: a 7-day forecast and monthly averages
  4. Cost per day in 3 bands

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contract for NSN: last shuttle times, taxi fallback, late-arrival motel check-in.
  2. Four walking clusters with rescue anchors: High St, the waterfront and saltwater baths, Kaiteriteri, Marahau.
  3. Place pages with verified cutoffs (Motueka District Museum, Abel Tasman trackheads, Riwaka Resurgence) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Summer and storm fixtures so the Abel Tasman day can go green or be swapped for a winery loop.
