Voykit pocket guide · New Zealand
Motueka
Base here 2 nights for Abel Tasman: it is the cheapest bed near the park gate, 20 min from Marahau and 15 min from Kaiteriteri.
Motueka is a working orchard town of about 8,000 people on the Motueka River, and the closest town to both Abel Tasman and Kahurangi national parks. Travellers use it as a bed base and a supermarket stop rather than a sightseeing town: the beaches at Kaiteriteri and Marahau, the coastal track and the kayak launches are all 15–30 minutes away by car. It also has one of the country's highest sunshine-hour counts, so rain plans matter less here than on the West Coast.

Get around
A car is the practical choice: buses run to Nelson, Richmond, Mapua, Kaiteriteri and Marahau but are thin and not built around early park departures. Motueka Airport is a small airfield south of town. Distances are short — Nelson 40 min, Richmond 30 min, Takaka 55 min — but the Takaka Hill road is winding.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Kia ora or a handshake; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; overlong small talk before business
- Marae visit: Wait to be called on, follow your guide through the pōwhiri, remove shoes before the meeting house; avoid: Eating or drinking inside the wharenui; walking in front of speakers
- Tables and heads: Keep bottoms off tables and hats off tables; food stays away from heads; avoid: Sitting on tables or kitchen benches; touching people's heads
- Roads: Pull over at slow-vehicle bays to let queues pass; wave thanks; avoid: Stopping on the road for photos; drifting right after a stop
- Outdoors: Carry out all rubbish; use toilets; stick to tracks; avoid: Feeding kea and other birds; toileting outside
- Talk: Self-deprecating humour and understatement; avoid: Calling New Zealanders Australians; boasting
- Home visit: Bring wine or something to share; shoes off if the hosts do; avoid: Arriving empty-handed to a 'bring a plate' event
- Names: Use Māori place names and pronounce them with care; avoid: Joking about Māori words or haka
Scams and watch-outs
- No public transport to most trailheads: arrange a shuttle or water taxi before you arrive.
- Abel Tasman coastal track huts and campsites book out months ahead in summer; check DOC.
- Sandflies at Marahau and along the coast; bring repellent.
- One-lane bridges and logging or orchard trucks on SH60: pull over and let them pass.
A small, quiet town and one of the safer bases in the region. The real risks are the sea and the bush: cold water, strong currents at some beaches, and weather that changes fast on the Abel Tasman coast. Tell someone your plan before a solo tramp.
