Harleston is a small working market town on the A143 near the Suffolk border, with Georgian frontages, a Wednesday market and no railway station of its own. Most visitors use it as a bed for the Waveney valley, the Angles Way long-distance path and the surrounding countryside rather than as a sightseeing destination. Two nights is the useful maximum; a car or a bike makes the difference.

Getting around

The centre is small enough to walk in 15 minutes end to end. There is no railway station (the old one closed in 1953); the nearest is Diss, about 6 miles away, on the London–Norwich line. Buses link Harleston with Norwich, Bungay and Diss, but services are thin and some routes have changed operators: check times before you rely on them. A car or a hired bike is the practical way to reach the Waveney valley, the Angles Way and the villages.

A quiet, low-crime market town; the practical risks are unlit country lanes, thin bus services and long waits for a taxi after the pubs close. Book a return cab number before an evening out.
  • No railway station: plan the Diss connection and a taxi or bus for the last 6 miles.
  • Rural bus timetables change and some operators have stopped running routes: check the day before.
  • Most pubs and restaurants stop serving food by 21:00 and several close on Mondays.
