Dalhousie is a small colonial-era hill station at about 2,000 m in Chamba district, Himachal Pradesh, built across five hills around three promenade malls. It is a walking and picnic town, not a sightseeing one: the malls, the deodar and pine forest, Panchpula and the Kalatop-Khajjiar sanctuary are the whole point. Two nights covers it; three if you add Chamba town.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe for a hill town; the real risks are the winding Pathankot road, winter ice, monsoon landslides and altitude if you push straight up from the plains. 112 covers police, fire and ambulance.
  • Roads ice over in winter and the Pathankot drive can be slow in fog.
  • Khajjiar meadow is heavily littered in the July peak; go early in the day.
  • Book July rooms weeks ahead; walk-in rates rise in the season.
  • Kalatop sanctuary roads are narrow and partly jeep-only; check access before setting out.
