Klang is the royal town of Selangor and the original home of bak kut teh, 50 minutes from KL Sentral by KTM Komuter. The town centre is small and walkable, but the sights are modest and the buses now stop 8 km out at Klang Sentral. Come for the food and Little India, add Pulau Ketam if you have a night, and keep the rest of your trip in Kuala Lumpur or elsewhere in Selangor.

Getting around

KTM Komuter links Klang station with KL Sentral (about 50 min) and Port Klang (about 20 min). Long-distance and many local buses use Klang Sentral, 8 km from the centre, with a few pick-up points in town. Taxis outside the station rarely use the meter — expect RM10–15 per short ride — and driving is the easiest way to reach Telok Gong or the malls.

Watch out

Safety

Klang is a normal working Malaysian town and safe by day; the real annoyances are unmetered taxis, traffic on Jalan Tengku Kelana and the heat. Little India has a police presence and the main police headquarters nearby.
  • Metered taxis are hard to get; agree the fare before you sit in.
  • Klang Sentral is 8 km from the town centre — allow extra time and a taxi fare if you arrive by long-distance bus.
  • Little India is packed and traffic-clogged in the weeks before Deepavali; watch your bag in the crowds.
  • Afternoon storms are common Oct–Dec; carry a light rain jacket.
  • The Royal Palace grounds are closed to visitors — view from outside only.
