Tegucigalpa is Honduras's capital, set in a mountain valley at about 990 m, with a compact colonial core around Parque Central and viewpoints on the surrounding hills. Most travellers pass through on the way to the Bay Islands or Copán, and one day covers the cathedral, the museums and El Picacho. The city is spread out, traffic is heavy, and the sister city Comayagüela across the river is where most buses arrive and where you should not walk after dark.

Getting around

Taxis (directos) and ride-hailing apps cover the city; agree the taxi price before you get in, and expect it to rise with passengers and after dark. Apps are usually cheaper and have working seatbelts. City buses run unlabelled routes that most visitors will not use; colectivos follow fixed routes. Cross-town takes about 20 min without traffic and much longer at rush hour.

Watch out

Safety

Tegucigalpa is a normal working capital, not a resort: use taxis or apps after dark, avoid Comayagüela on foot, and keep phones and jewellery out of sight. The main risks are street crime, traffic and heavy rain.
  • Do not walk in Comayagüela, especially after dark, and do not walk from bus stations to a hotel with bags.
  • Use taxis or apps after dark everywhere, including the centre.
  • Parque La Concordia and some hill parks have little security: go by day, in a group, and leave valuables behind.
  • Heavy rain May–Oct can flood roads and trigger landslides on the hills.
  • Keep a small cash reserve: not every taxi or small café takes cards.
