Cheyenne is Wyoming's capital and largest city, a compact downtown of state buildings, railroad history and Western museums on the I-80/I-25 crossroads 90 miles north of Denver. Most travellers pass through in a day; the city justifies a second night only during Cheyenne Frontier Days, when 200,000 visitors fill the town.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: the sights spread across downtown and Frontier Park, and on-street parking downtown is mostly free but time-limited. Cheyenne Transit runs six local bus lines; a tourist trolley loops the downtown landmarks in about 90 minutes. Rush hour is roughly 16:30–18:30 on weekdays.

Safety

Cheyenne is a low-crime, small-city stop; the real hazards are winter driving on I-80, sudden spring storms and long, empty stretches of highway between towns.
  • Downtown parking is time-limited even where it looks free; overstaying can mean a fine of about $15.
  • Spring weather swings hard: a sunny morning can turn to snow or a storm by afternoon — check the forecast daily.
  • Frontier Days (last full week of July) brings heavy traffic on I-25, Carey Ave and 8th Ave and sold-out beds.
  • Cheyenne has no Amtrak service; the nearest rail hub is Denver.
