Muan is a rural county on South Jeolla's west coast, not a city: the provincial government sits in Namak new town, the airport (MWX) sits 10 km out, and the sights — a record-size white lotus pond, tidal flats, a beach, a small aerospace museum — are spread across farmland. A car or a taxi makes it work; buses are cheap but slow. Most travellers use it as an airport stop or a half-day between Mokpo and Gwangju.

Getting around

Local buses run a flat ₩1,000 fare but frequencies are thin and most routes fan out from Muan Bus Terminal. Taxis are easy around Muan-eup, Namak and the Mokpo edge; base fare ₩5,000 for the first 2 km, plus 20% after midnight and 20% for crossing into another district. A rental car is the practical choice for the lotus pond, Haeje mudflats and Topmeori Beach. Muan Jilju public bikes cover Namak and Oryong only, 07:00–21:00, ₩1,000 for the first three hours.

Watch out

Safety

Very low crime; the real risks are rural roads after dark, thin bus service, summer heat and rain, and mudflat tides — never walk out on flats without a guide and a tide table.
  • Attractions are 20–40 min apart by car; without one, plan two sights maximum per day.
  • Muan Train Station is nowhere near Muan-eup — it sits at Mongtan-myeon, about 34.57, 126.31. Use Mongtan Station or the bus terminal instead.
  • The bus terminal ticket counter closes 12:00–13:00; use the machines or buy ahead.
  • July and August bring more than half the year's rain; check the lotus festival dates before booking.
  • Rural buses stop early in the evening; a missed last bus means an expensive taxi.
