Tervola is a rural municipality of about 3,000 people on the Kemijoki river in south-west Lapland, between Kemi and Rovaniemi. Almost everyone who "visits" is driving E75 and sees fields, river views and filling stations. It works as one quiet night or a half-day break, not as a destination in itself.

Getting around

A car is effectively required: sights and trailheads are spread over 30+ km of back roads. Trains between Kemi and Rovaniemi stop at Tervola station (no ticket sales or indoor facilities). Kemi–Rovaniemi coaches do not enter the village centre; the stop is Hastinpolku th on E75. Local Sea Lapland buses run to villages on weekdays but timetables are thin and Finnish-only.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe. The real risks are driving: ice and snow Nov–Apr, long empty stretches, and slow help if you break down. 4G works on E75 and approach roads; no 5G.
  • Coaches on E75 skip the village centre: get off at Hastinpolku th and arrange a lift or taxi.
  • Pisavaara Strict Nature Reserve is closed to all access without written permission from the forest administration; Runkaus reserve is also restricted.
  • Some back roads to Myllyköngäs rapids are private; check locally before driving in.
  • No 5G in the area; 4G works on E75 and approach roads.
