Haldwani and Kathgodam sit on the Bhabar foothills where the plains meet the first Himalayan ridges, about 290 km from Delhi by road. Kathgodam is where the broad-gauge line from Delhi ends, so nearly every hill-bound traveller passes through. There is little here that justifies a full day: the value is a bed near the station, cheap Kumaoni food, and an early start uphill.

Getting around

Shared auto-rickshaws and e-rickshaws run fixed routes between the twin towns and outlying areas, ₹10–20 per person; the Haldwani–Kathgodam service runs constantly. Private autos and cycle rickshaws cost ₹50–150 by distance. Taxis are booked through hotels or the station pre-paid booth; a half-day to Bhimtal or Nainital is roughly ₹1,200–1,500. The bazaars and riverfront are walkable; arterial-road traffic is chaotic.

Safety

The main risks are road traffic, monsoon flash floods in the Gaula riverbed and unagreed auto fares. Late arrivals are manageable: use the station pre-paid taxi counter or the retiring rooms.
  • Monsoon (Jul–Sep) brings flash floods: stay out of the Gaula riverbed.
  • Agree the fare before boarding any auto or taxi; shared rides are ₹20–30 (≈ under US$1) per person.
  • Late-night arrivals on the Ranikhet Express should use the station pre-paid taxi counter or retiring rooms.
  • Monkeys near forest fringes will take food from your hand.
