Pangnirtung is an Inuit hamlet of about 1,500 on Baffin Island, reached only by air from Iqaluit. It is the starting point for treks into Auyuittuq National Park and the Akshayuk Pass, and it has a working print shop and tapestry studio. The town itself is small: two day hikes, one arts centre, one place to eat. Treat it as a trailhead, not a resort.

Watch out

Safety

Low crime, high environment. The real risks are cold, wind, remoteness and wildlife: tell someone your route, carry bear deterrents outside town, and treat any flight delay as normal.
  • Pangnirtung is a dry town: no alcohol is sold, and possessing alcohol within 25 km (16 mi) of town can lead to arrest.
  • Food and supplies are air-freighted and expensive; fresh produce is limited. Bring what you need for the pass.
  • Auyuittuq National Park entry requirements, permits and fees: check Parks Canada before you travel.
  • Weather changes fast: wind, rain and snow are possible in any summer month. Carry layers and a shelter.
  • No road out. If flights are cancelled, you wait — budget a buffer day before any onward international flight.
  • Polar bear country: do not hike or camp outside town without bear deterrents and local advice.
