North Bay is the self-styled gateway to Northern Ontario, a city of about 52,000 on the north shore of Lake Nipissing where Highway 11 and Highway 17 merge. It is a practical break on the drive between Toronto, Sudbury and Ottawa, with a walkable waterfront, a small museum in the old CPR station, and winter skiing inside the city. Most travellers pass through in a day; two nights only pay off if you ski, hike or use it as a base for Temagami and Mattawa.

Getting around

North Bay Transit runs city buses including a winter route toward the ski hill; a car is far more practical for the waterfront, Callander and highway stops. Downtown, the waterfront and the museum are walkable from each other in about 15–25 minutes. Taxis and rideshare cover the gaps. No passenger train serves North Bay since the Northlander was cancelled in 2012; a restart has been planned for around 2026 but is not confirmed, so plan on bus or car.

Safety

North Bay is a normal mid-size Canadian city: violent crime is rare, but lock your car and don't leave bags visible, and take care on ice and unlit trails in winter. 911 works everywhere.
  • Winter driving: Highway 11 and 17 can close in snow squalls; check road conditions before leaving.
  • No passenger train service since 2012; the Northlander restart is planned but not confirmed — plan on bus or car.
  • Some restaurants close early and on Mondays; check hours the same day.
  • Black flies and mosquitoes near the lake in late spring and early summer; bring repellent.
