Kiama is a small South Coast town about 90 minutes south of Sydney by car and just over 2 hours by train, best known for its blowhole, the 20 km Kiama Coast Walk and dairy-country lookouts. Most people see the centre on foot in a day; a second day covers Bombo, Minnamurra and Saddleback Mountain. It works as a weekend from Sydney or a stop on the Illawarra coast.

Getting around

The centre, station, harbour and blowhole are walkable. Trains on the South Coast Line link Kiama, Bombo, Minnamurra and Gerringong, and run roughly hourly to Sydney and Wollongong. For Saddleback Mountain, Jamberoo and Gerroa you need a car or a taxi; a coastal cycleway runs down from the north.

Safety

Kiama is a safe, small coastal town. The real risks are the ocean (rips at Bombo, waves on rock platforms) and summer heat and fire weather; use patrolled beaches and check conditions.
  • Bombo Beach has strong rips and is often unpatrolled: swim between the flags at patrolled beaches.
  • Rock platforms and the Bombo Headland quarry are uneven and slippery; watch for waves and stay back from the edge.
  • Summer school holidays and long weekends fill motels; book ahead.
  • On total fire ban days, check conditions before bush walks or the Saddleback drive.
