Rules in force · 7Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Central Europe ↗Six of the nine countries here — Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia — charge a time-based motorway vignette, mostly digital and linked to the number plate; buy it before the first motorway past the border, because cameras, not toll booths, do the checking.
  • Central Europe ↗Temporary police checks at internal Schengen borders are common in this region in 2026 (Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovenia among others — check): keep your passport on you on every cross-border train, bus and road even though there is no fixed control post.
  • Slovakia ↗Slovakia is in the EU and the Schengen area: check entry rules, the EU Entry/Exit System and any travel authorisation requirement for your passport on official sources.
  • Slovakia ↗Motorways and expressways need an electronic vignette bought before you drive on them.
  • Slovakia ↗Many high trails in Tatra National Park close seasonally (roughly November to mid-June); check the park's current closures before planning a hike.

Trenčín is the main town of the Považie region in western Slovakia, on the Váh river about 120 km north of Bratislava. The draw is a castle on a rock above a small, walkable old town, plus a Roman inscription carved into that rock in 179 AD. Most travellers see it in a day, or use it as a rail stop between Bratislava and Žilina or Košice. Two nights only makes sense if you add the spa town of Trenčianske Teplice or Beckov castle.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The centre is a pedestrian zone and you can cross it on foot in a few minutes. City buses cover the suburbs and the station: buy from the driver with cash (€2.00), tap a contactless bank card at a yellow reader (€1.00), or use the Transdev/SAD app or card (€0.80); all tickets last 60 minutes, and 24-hour tickets exist. Stops must be requested — stand visibly to board and press a button to get off. Regional buses leave from across the road from the train station.

Watch out

Safety

Trenčín is calm and safe by European standards, with a visible police presence downtown. The real risks are pickpockets on buses and trains and uneven steps up to the castle.
  • Pickpockets on buses, trains and in crowds: keep your wallet in a front pocket.
  • Buses only stop if you flag them and doors open only when you press the button.
  • Castle opening hours and ticket prices change by season: check the museum site before you climb.
  • Pohoda festival fills the town and its campsite for a July weekend: book beds early or avoid that weekend.
