Trenčín
Give Trenčín one full day and one night: castle in the morning, old town and the Roman inscription after lunch, then move on by train.
Trenčín is the main town of the Považie region in western Slovakia, on the Váh river about 120 km north of Bratislava. The draw is a castle on a rock above a small, walkable old town, plus a Roman inscription carved into that rock in 179 AD. Most travellers see it in a day, or use it as a rail stop between Bratislava and Žilina or Košice. Two nights only makes sense if you add the spa town of Trenčianske Teplice or Beckov castle.

The centre is a pedestrian zone and you can cross it on foot in a few minutes.
