  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Eastern Europe ↗Reach this subregion only from the EU side — Romania for Moldova — through crossings run by recognised authorities; no route through Ukraine, Belarus or Russia is planned here.
  • Eastern Europe ↗Re-read your government's advice for Moldova (it covers Transnistria) in the week you travel; the situation next door changes fast.
  • Eastern Europe ↗Carry euros in cash for Transnistria and village Moldova; cards stop working at the Dniester.
  • Russia ↗Check your own government travel advice for Russia before any booking; advice depends on your passport and changes without notice.
  • Russia ↗Direct flights from much of Europe and North America are suspended; no independent tourist route is documented here.
  • Russia ↗Confirm that your travel insurance and medical evacuation cover apply to Russia before you rely on it.

Irkutsk is the gateway to Lake Baikal and a natural break on the Trans-Siberian Railway, roughly halfway between Moscow and Vladivostok. The historic centre is compact and walkable, with Siberian baroque churches, Decembrist house-museums and carved wooden houses standing beside Soviet blocks. Most travellers use it as a two-night stop before or after the lake.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The historic centre is compact and walkable. Trams, trolleybuses, buses and marshrutka minibuses cover longer hops; pay the driver on exit on buses and trolleybuses, and buy tram tickets from the driver then stamp them on board. Yandex and Maxim are the common taxi apps; agree the fare or use the app rather than accepting a private driver at the station.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Listvyanka and Lake Baikal

go

Door to door: About 1–1.5 h

Bus or marshrutka from the bus station, or a taxi; about 1 h by road

The classic Baikal day trip; leave early and check the last bus back.

Slyudyanka

caution

Door to door: 2–3 h

Suburban train or bus along the lake shore

A long day; better as an overnight if you want the south Baikal shore.

Angarsk

skip

Door to door: About 1 h

Suburban train or bus

An industrial town with little for a short trip.

Bratsk

overnight

Door to door: 10 h+

Train or long-distance bus

Too far for a day; only worth it if you are heading north anyway.

Nizhneudinsk

overnight

Door to door: 8 h+

Train on the Trans-Siberian line

A rail stop, not a day trip.

Tayshet

overnight

Door to door: 10 h+

Train on the Trans-Siberian line

A junction town; useful only as a rail break.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Historic centre (Kirov Square and Karla Marksa)

Walk to most sights, museums and the Angara embankment; best for a short stay.

Near the railway station

Convenient for early Trans-Siberian departures; a 20–30 min walk or short tram ride from the centre.

Listvyanka (Lake Baikal)

About 1 h by road; stay here instead of Irkutsk if the lake is your main reason for coming.

Watch out

Safety

Irkutsk is generally calm for visitors who use app taxis and stay in the centre. The real risks are winter cold, unlicensed taxis at the station, and pickpocketing on crowded transport; check your government's travel advice for Russia before you book.
  • Unlicensed taxi drivers at the railway station overcharge; a ride to the centre should cost about RUB 200–300.
  • Winter temperatures drop below -20°C; ice, wind chill and short daylight are the real risks.
  • Carry your passport and migration card; registration rules apply to most foreign visitors.
  • Check your government's travel advice for Russia before booking anything.
