NeunkirchenNeunkirchen (Saar)

Give Neunkirchen one night or a half-day: the ironworks park and the Saarpark-Center are the draw; sleep in Saarbrücken and day-trip in unless you are here for the zoo.

Rules in force · 7Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Central Europe ↗Six of the nine countries here — Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia — charge a time-based motorway vignette, mostly digital and linked to the number plate; buy it before the first motorway past the border, because cameras, not toll booths, do the checking.
  • Central Europe ↗Temporary police checks at internal Schengen borders are common in this region in 2026 (Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovenia among others — check): keep your passport on you on every cross-border train, bus and road even though there is no fixed control post.
  • Germany ↗Germany is in the EU and the Schengen area: check entry rules, the EU Entry/Exit System and any travel authorisation requirement for your passport on official sources.
  • Germany ↗Nazi symbols and gestures are criminal offences, including as jokes or souvenirs.
  • Germany ↗Many city centres are low-emission zones: a car needs the right sticker (Umweltplakette) to enter.

Neunkirchen is the Saarland's second city, about 47,000 people, built on the Neunkircher Eisenwerk ironworks that closed in 1982. The blast furnaces now sit in a free open park beside the region's largest shopping mall, and the compact centre is walkable in an afternoon. Most travellers pass through on the Saarbrücken–Homburg line; a night is enough unless the zoo or Gondwana is the point of the trip.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The centre — main station, Stummplatz, Saarpark-Center and the Alte Hüttenareal — is compact and walkable, but the zoo and several districts sit on higher ground, so expect uphill walking. Local buses run under the saarVV regional tariff (buy from the driver or in the saarVV app); most lines meet at Stummplatz. An on-demand shuttle, flitsaar, covers off-peak and outer areas via its own app. Cycling is hard work on the hills and busy arterial roads; driving is easy, with multi-storey car parks signposted in the centre and parking at the Saarpark-Center.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Saarbrücken

go

Door to door: About 40 min

Regional train from Neunkirchen Hbf, about 20 min

Baroque old town and a French-leaning food scene; the natural base if you want city evenings.

Homburg

go

Door to door: About 45 min

Regional train toward Homburg, about 20–30 min

University town with the Schlossberg caves; pairs well with a Neunkirchen half-day.

Saarlouis

caution

Door to door: 1–1.5 h

Train via Saarbrücken, or about 40 min by car

Star-shaped fortress town; the train route is indirect, so a car helps.

St Wendel

caution

Door to door: 1–1.5 h

Train via Neunkirchen/Saarbrücken, about 1 h

Worth it for the Wendelinus basilica and old town, but check connections.

Merzig

caution

Door to door: 1.5 h

Train toward Trier, about 1 h

Gateway to the Saar loop; better as part of a Saarland road trip.

Mettlach

overnight

Door to door: 1.5–2 h

Train toward Trier, about 1 h 15 min

Villeroy & Boch and the Saarschleife; too far for a relaxed return day.

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Centre / Stummplatz

Walk to the ironworks park, the mall and the main station; the practical choice for one night.

Zoo hill (Zoostraße)

Quieter, uphill, near the zoo entrance; hotel guests often get free zoo entry.

Saarbrücken (alternative base)

20 min by train; far more beds, bars and restaurants if Neunkirchen is only a half-day.

Watch out

Safety

Neunkirchen is a normal, safe German small city; the real issues are uphill walks, thin late-night train connections and pickpocketing only in the usual crowded mall and market spots.
  • The ironworks grounds are open at all hours, but guided tours (including the Blast Furnace VI platform) run March–October only — check times at the tourist information.
  • Zoo hours shorten in winter (Nov–Feb 09:00–17:00); the last entry is earlier than the closing time.
  • Some districts and the zoo are uphill from the station: allow more walking time than the map suggests.
  • Regional trains toward Homburg and Saarbrücken are frequent but thin late at night; check the last connection before an evening out.
