Neunkirchen is the Saarland's second city, about 47,000 people, built on the Neunkircher Eisenwerk ironworks that closed in 1982. The blast furnaces now sit in a free open park beside the region's largest shopping mall, and the compact centre is walkable in an afternoon. Most travellers pass through on the Saarbrücken–Homburg line; a night is enough unless the zoo or Gondwana is the point of the trip.

Get around
The centre — main station, Stummplatz, Saarpark-Center and the Alte Hüttenareal — is compact and walkable, but the zoo and several districts sit on higher ground, so expect uphill walking. Local buses run under the saarVV regional tariff (buy from the driver or in the saarVV app); most lines meet at Stummplatz. An on-demand shuttle, flitsaar, covers off-peak and outer areas via its own app. Cycling is hard work on the hills and busy arterial roads; driving is easy, with multi-storey car parks signposted in the centre and parking at the Saarpark-Center.
