Batu Pahat (Bandar Penggaram) is a Johor market town of about 140,000 people, roughly 2 h by road from Johor Bahru and 3.5 h from Kuala Lumpur. There is no railway station and no airport. Its pull is cheap food, rotating night markets and low prices, so most travellers pass through on the way between Johor Bahru, Muar and Melaka rather than making it a destination.

Getting around

A car or taxi is the practical way around: the town has several one-way streets, so watch the signs. Local stage buses run from the terminal in the town centre to the suburbs and are cheap. Ride-hailing works in the centre but thins out at night and at Minyak Beku.

Safety

Generally safe, with the usual small-town cautions: watch for traffic on one-way streets, keep bags zipped at night markets, and carry cash for stalls that do not take cards.
  • No train station and no airport: the nearest railhead is Kluang, and you still need a road transfer from there.
  • Afternoon thunderstorms are common; plan outdoor stops for the morning.
  • Night markets move to a different neighbourhood each evening — check which one is on before you set out.
  • Some food stalls close by mid-afternoon; hawker centres are busiest at breakfast and dinner.
  • Border crossings to Singapore can add an hour or more at weekends and holidays.
