Dinant is a small Meuse town squeezed between a cliff and the river, 1 h 30 min by train from Brussels. The citadel, the collegiate church, the cave and the Sax house sit within 15 minutes' walk of each other, so a day trip covers the core. Stay one night only if you want kayaking, the Leffe museum or an early start into the Ardennes.

Walk. The station, church, citadel lift and cave road are all within about 20 minutes on foot, and there is no local transport worth using. The citadel is reached by cable car or 408 steps.

Watch out

Safety

A relaxed small town with no real street risk. The genuine hazards are the 408 citadel steps when wet, the river current if you swim, and pickpockets only in the summer boat queues.
  • Accommodation is scarce: three hotels and a hostel, so book weeks ahead in summer.
  • The citadel cable car can close in strong wind; the 408 steps are the fallback.
  • Cave tours run hourly in French, Dutch and English but sell out on wet days.
  • Kayak and boat operators run May–Sep only; check water levels after heavy rain.
  • Card payment is common but some small cafés and the market are cash-friendly.
