Stay one night: penguins at dusk, the Victorian Precinct by day. Two nights only if you add the Waitaki Valley or Moeraki.
Oamaru is a small North Otago town, about 13,000 people, on State Highway 1 between Christchurch and Dunedin. It has the country's most complete Victorian commercial streetscape, built from local Oamaru stone, and a little blue penguin colony at the harbour. Most travellers stop one night on the drive south; the Waitaki Valley and Moeraki Boulders justify a second.

- Bushy Beach has a viewing hide only — keep back from the yellow-eyed penguins and stay off the beach below.
