Oamaru is a small North Otago town, about 13,000 people, on State Highway 1 between Christchurch and Dunedin. It has the country's most complete Victorian commercial streetscape, built from local Oamaru stone, and a little blue penguin colony at the harbour. Most travellers stop one night on the drive south; the Waitaki Valley and Moeraki Boulders justify a second.
