Waco

Give Waco one day for the main sights: the Magnolia Silos, the Suspension Bridge and the Dr Pepper Museum. Add a second night only if you want the Mammoth site or Baylor. Check current hours before you go.

Waco sits on I-35 between Dallas and Austin, 90 minutes from each, and works as a one-night stop on a Texas road trip rather than a base. The draw is compact: the Magnolia Silos, a walkable riverfront downtown, Baylor University, and the Waco Mammoth National Monument. A car makes the day easier; downtown alone is walkable.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: sights spread from the Mammoth site in the northwest to Baylor in the south. Waco Transit buses run daytime routes only with limited stops. Downtown is compact, but the Silos, the bridge and the Dr Pepper Museum are spread out enough that walking the whole set is a long half-day — drive or rideshare between them.

Watch out

Safety

Waco is a normal mid-size Texas city: the tourist core around the Silos, downtown and Baylor is fine on foot in daylight. Drive between districts after dark, lock the car, and treat summer heat as the main real risk.
  • Summer heat: plan indoor stops between 13:00 and 16:00 and carry water.
  • Waco Transit stops in the evening; check the last bus before you rely on it.
  • The 1993 Branch Davidian stand-off happened 15 miles outside the city; locals are tired of the subject.
  • The Magnolia Silos and the Mammoth site draw crowds at weekends: go early and check opening hours (check).
