Fort Worth

Give Fort Worth 2 nights: one for the Stockyards and downtown, one for the Cultural District museums. Skip it as a Dallas day trip — the drive eats 1–1.5 h each way.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Fort Worth is the Metroplex's western half, 50 km from Dallas and closer to its cattle-town past. The sights split into three clusters — Stockyards, downtown/Sundance Square, and the Cultural District — plus TCU and Near Southside. Two nights covers it; a car or rideshare is near-essential because the clusters are 3–8 km apart and buses are slow.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

Trinity Metro buses and the Trinity Railway Express (TRE) link downtown, DFW Airport and Dallas; TRE has no Sunday service. Downtown is walkable and the Blue Line bus loops Sundance Square. For the Stockyards and the Cultural District, use a car or rideshare — 2026 estimate $10–18 per trip. B-cycle bike share has downtown stations.

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Downtown / Sundance Square

Walkable to Bass Hall, the Water Gardens and the Sid Richardson Museum; best for a short stay without a car.

Stockyards

Sleep next to the cattle drives and Billy Bob's; quieter on weeknights, loud on weekends.

Cultural District / West 7th

Walk to the Kimbell, Modern and Amon Carter; 2 miles west of downtown, limited late-night food.

Near Southside (Magnolia / South Main)

Breweries, bars and restaurants; 5–10 min drive south of downtown.

Watch out

Safety

Fort Worth is generally safe in tourist areas; the real risks are summer heat, storm season and driving on I-35W. Keep valuables out of sight in parked cars and stay in lit areas downtown at night.
  • Summer heat: plan indoor museum time midday in Jul–Aug.
  • Spring storms and the occasional ice storm in winter; check forecasts before driving.
  • TRE does not run on Sundays or most major holidays.
  • Stockyards bars and events get crowded on weekend nights; watch your tab and your parking spot.
