Roma

One night is enough: see the Big Rig and the saleyards, then push on west to Charleville or north to Emerald. Two nights only if you arrive on the Westlander at 6:10am.

Roma sits where the Warrego and Carnarvon highways cross, 480 km west of Brisbane, so it works as a break in a long drive rather than a destination. The town's story is cattle and gas: the Big Rig explains the oil and gas years, and the Tuesday and Thursday cattle sales are the reason many people stop at all. The Westlander train calls twice a week in each direction, at unsociable hours.

  • Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
  • Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
  • Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
  • Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
  • Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
  • Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
  • Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.

Getting around

Roma is flat and small; the main street is a 10–15 minute walk end to end. Most visitors arrive by car and drive between the Big Rig, the saleyards and the highway motels. There is no useful local bus for visitors.

Watch out

Safety

A small, quiet country town; the real risks are heat, long empty drives and wildlife on the road at dawn and dusk. Standard outback caution applies, not city crime.
  • Distances are large: Brisbane is about 480 km (298 mi), Charleville about 270 km (168 mi). Fuel up in Roma before heading west or north.
  • Summer days regularly pass 35°C (95°F); carry water and avoid walking the sights at midday.
  • The Westlander arrives at Roma at 6:10am westbound and 11:35pm eastbound: book a motel that allows those check-in times.
  • After heavy summer rain, outback highways and dirt roads can close: check Queensland road conditions before driving on.
