Roma
One night is enough: see the Big Rig and the saleyards, then push on west to Charleville or north to Emerald. Two nights only if you arrive on the Westlander at 6:10am.
Roma sits where the Warrego and Carnarvon highways cross, 480 km west of Brisbane, so it works as a break in a long drive rather than a destination. The town's story is cattle and gas: the Big Rig explains the oil and gas years, and the Tuesday and Thursday cattle sales are the reason many people stop at all. The Westlander train calls twice a week in each direction, at unsociable hours.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Distances are large: Brisbane is about 480 km, Charleville about 270 km. Fuel up in Roma before heading west or north.
- Summer days regularly pass 35°C; carry water and avoid walking the sights at midday.
- The Westlander arrives at Roma at 6:10am westbound and 11:35pm eastbound: book a motel that allows those check-in times.
- After heavy summer rain, outback highways and dirt roads can close: check Queensland road conditions before driving on.
A small, quiet country town; the real risks are heat, long empty drives and wildlife on the road at dawn and dusk. Standard outback caution applies, not city crime.
One and two days
