Koraput is the market town for Odisha's southern tribal belt, on a forested plateau near the Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh borders. It is not a sight in itself: the value is the day trips — Jeypore, Gupteswar cave shrine, Deomali peak, Duduma falls — and the Thursday market at Onukudelli. Roads are slow and winding, so plan two nights minimum and hire a car with a driver.

Getting around

No useful local bus network for sightseeing. Hire a car with driver for the day from Koraput or Jeypore — that is how you reach Gupteswar, Deomali, Duduma and Onukudelli. Shared taxis run from Vizianagaram to Koraput, Sunabeda and Jeypore. Inside Koraput town, auto-rickshaws cover the centre cheaply.

Watch out

Safety

Koraput is calm and low-crime; the real risks are hill-road driving, wildlife at dawn and dusk, and monsoon washouts. No night driving, no self-drive, and keep cash for the small towns.
  • Hill roads are narrow with hairpin bends, potholes and unlit stretches: no night driving, and skip self-drive.
  • Wildlife on the road at dawn and dusk, including bears and hyenas in the forest sections.
  • The last stretch to Bagara falls is a dirt track; ask locally about conditions after rain.
  • Limited English and limited card acceptance outside hotels: carry cash in small notes.
  • Duduma and Gupteswar are long, slow drives — do not stack both into one day.
