Fribourg is a bilingual city on a Sarine river peninsula, 30 min by train from Bern and about 1 h from Lausanne. Its Old Town holds one of Switzerland's best-preserved sets of walls and more than 200 Gothic facades, all walkable in an afternoon. Most travellers see it as a stop on the Bern–Lausanne line rather than a base; one night is enough to add the cathedral tower and a museum.

Getting around

Walk: the station to Place Tilleul and the cathedral is 10–15 min downhill via Rue de Lausanne. TPF buses 2 and 6 link the station, Place Tilleul and the cathedral; the funicular connects the upper and lower town. Trains run frequently to Bern, Lausanne, Geneva and Zurich.

Watch out

Safety

Fribourg is a low-risk city; the real issues are the steep, sometimes slippery Old Town slopes, pickpockets around the station at night, and late-night quiet streets where you may prefer a bus or taxi back uphill.
  • The Old Town sits below the station: expect a steep walk back up or a bus.
  • Some Old Town museums close on Mondays; check before you plan a museum day.
  • The cathedral tower has 368 steps and a small entry fee: check current hours and price.
  • Fribourg is French-speaking with a German-speaking minority; English is common in tourism but not everywhere.
