Give New Brunswick one night, or a half-day between trains: Rutgers, the Zimmerli and George Street. It is a college town, not a sightseeing base.
New Brunswick is a Rutgers University city on the Northeast Corridor, about an hour by NJ Transit from New York Penn Station and roughly the same from Philadelphia with a Trenton change. The draw is a compact downtown of theatres, bars and restaurants plus a free-to-cheap campus museum. Most travellers use it for one night, a show, or a stop on the way between the two big cities.

Downtown is walkable: station to George Street is about 5–10 min on foot. NJ Transit buses run along George Street and Route 27; Rutgers campus buses are open to the public. Taxis and rideshares cover the rest. Driving downtown means paid garages and 2-hour on-street limits on weekdays; traffic jams on Route 18 at rush hour and after football games.
