Mount Tai is the most climbed of China's five Daoist sacred mountains and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, rising just north of Tai'an in Shandong. Emperors climbed it to legitimise their rule; today the draw is the 6,600-plus stone steps of the Red Gate route, the carved cliffs and temples along the way, and the sunrise from the summit. It is a mountain you climb for the climb, not for solitude — the main path is busy, and the top is a small village of hotels, restaurants and vendors.

- The scenic bus and cable car remove most of the climbing, but the summit still needs walking on steps and slopes.
- The stairway itself is not suitable for wheelchairs or limited mobility; the base area and Dai Temple are easier.

- Take the bus and cable car when you can, and keep to marked paths to limit erosion on the slopes.
- Buy water and food from the stalls on the mountain so the local economy benefits, and carry the empties down.
- Do not leave offerings or carvings on rocks; the inscriptions are protected heritage.

How much does it cost to enter Mount Tai?
Peak-season scenic area entrance is around ¥115–125 per person (2026 estimate), with lower rates off season. Add the scenic bus (about ¥30–40 one way) and the cable car (about ¥80–140) if you skip the stairway. Summit coat rental is roughly ¥20–50 with a deposit.
What are the best hikes in Mount Tai?
The Red Gate stairway to the summit is the classic route, 4–7 hours of stone steps past carvings and temples. The bus-and-cable-car combination is the easy alternative, and the rear and western paths are quieter if you want to avoid the main stairway.
When is the best time to visit Mount Tai?
April and September to early November give the best mix of mild, clear weather and manageable crowds. Avoid the 1–7 May and 1–8 October holiday weeks, and expect ice on the upper steps from December to February.
Can I see the sunrise without sleeping on the mountain?
Yes — many people climb at night to reach the summit before first light. It is cold and dark, so bring a layer and a torch, or rent a coat at the top.
Is camping allowed on Mount Tai?
No. Camping is banned because of forest-fire risk. Sleep in a summit hotel for the sunrise, or stay in Tai'an and climb at night.
How do I get to Mount Tai from Beijing?
High-speed trains from Beijing South reach Tai'an in about 2 hours, then bus 3 or a taxi takes you to the Red Gate in 15–25 minutes.
