Mafeteng

Skip Mafeteng as a destination unless you need a stopover on the A2 between Maseru and the south: half a day for the mill and a meal, then move on.

Mafeteng is a market town of 40,000 on the A2, 76 km south of Maseru. Its only sight is the 1912 Diphiring Mill, a working roller mill still run by the Osborne family. Most travellers pass through on the way to Mohale's Hoek or Quthing. The town has two hotels and a few bars but no reason to stay overnight unless you need a bed en route.

  • Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
  • Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.
  • Southern Africa ↗A rental car may leave its home country only with the rental company's cross-border letter, the registration papers and paid road taxes at each post; driving into Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique or Angola without them ends at the border.
  • Southern Africa ↗Across the subregion, plan every road leg to arrive before sunset: livestock, wildlife, pedestrians and unlit trucks make night driving the main cause of serious visitor accidents.
  • Lesotho ↗Check visa and entry rules for your passport on official Lesotho government sources; you also need South African entry to reach it by road.
  • Lesotho ↗Taking a South African rental car into Lesotho needs a cross-border letter from the rental company; Sani Pass needs a 4x4.
  • Lesotho ↗Border posts have fixed opening hours; smaller posts close earlier than the main Maseru bridge.

Watch out

Safety

Mafeteng is generally safe during the day. Petty theft can occur at the market and bus rank. Avoid walking alone after dark; the A2 is poorly lit outside town.
  • The A2 has potholes and livestock: drive slowly, especially after dark.
  • Diphiring Mill may close without notice: call ahead if it's your main reason to stop.
  • Petrol stations are limited; fill up in Maseru before heading south.
