Burren Junction

Stop for the 41.5 °C (107 °F) bore baths and one night, not a base: 1 night, or a 1–2 h break on the Kamilaroi Highway between Walgett and Narrabri.

Burren Junction is a hamlet of a few hundred people on the Kamilaroi Highway in Walgett Shire, in Northwestern New South Wales. It began as a railway encampment in 1902 and today exists for travellers as a single stop: an artesian bore bath at a constant 41.5 °C, sunk in 1921, plus a pub with cabins and a cheap primitive campground beside the baths. There is no scheduled rail or air service, so you arrive by road or on the twice-weekly coach from Narrabri via Wee Waa. Treat it as one night, or a hot soak and a meal on the long drive between Walgett and Narrabri.

  • Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
  • Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
  • Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
  • Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
  • Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
  • Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
  • Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.

Getting around

Everything is walkable: the pub and the baths sit within about 1 km of each other on flat ground. You need a car for anything beyond town, and there is no fuel or public transport inside the hamlet, so fill up in Walgett or Narrabri.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet, low-crime hamlet; the real risks are heat, isolation and long unlit roads. Carry water, avoid driving at dusk, and check the bore baths' seasonal opening before you commit.
  • The bore baths are closed in summer: check the Walgett Shire page before you drive out for them.
  • No fuel, no supermarket and no bank in the hamlet: stock up and fill up in Walgett or Narrabri.
  • Mobile coverage is patchy outside town; download offline maps before the Kamilaroi Highway.
  • Long distances between towns and wildlife on the road at dusk: avoid driving this stretch after dark.
  • Summer heat is extreme and the nearest hospital is in Walgett: carry more water than you think you need.
