Khorog is the Pamir Highway hub in the east; plan it only as part of a Pamir trip: 1–2 nights, about 12 hours by shared taxi from Dushanbe or a weather-dependent flight.

Khorog is the administrative centre of Gorno-Badakhshan (GBAO) in the Pamir mountains, at about 2,200 m, at the confluence of the Gunt and Shakhdara rivers. It is a supply stop for travellers on the Pamir Highway and the Wakhan Valley. Services are basic and prices are higher than in Dushanbe. Trips may need a GBAO permit and depend on road and security conditions, so check before you commit.
