  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Bainbridge Island is a wooded, low-rise island town 35 minutes by ferry from downtown Seattle, with a walkable main street at Winslow and the ferry terminal as its transport hub. Most visitors come for a half-day or a day; a single night buys you the Bloedel Reserve, the Japanese American Exclusion Memorial and quiet trails without the Seattle crowds.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The ferry terminal is the hub: cabs and buses meet most sailings, and Winslow is a short walk. Kitsap Transit buses (route 390 daily; 93–99 and 106 on weekday commuter runs) plus the BI Ride visitor shuttle cover the island; full fare is about $2 and part of the ORCA network. A car makes the gardens and parks much easier.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Door to door: About 1 h

Washington State Ferries from the Bainbridge terminal to Pier 52, 35 min

Walk-on is easiest; the ferry runs roughly every 40–65 min.

Small waterfront town; good half-day with a car or bus.

Kitsap Transit via Poulsbo or Silverdale, or drive via SR-3

Bus transfers are slow; drive if you can.

Port Orchard

caution

Door to door: About 1 h

Waterfront town; pair with Bremerton.

Gig Harbor

go

Door to door: About 1 h

Drive via SR-16 across the Tacoma Narrows

Harbour town with food and views; needs a car.

Manchester, Washington

skip

Door to door: About 1 h

Drive via SR-3 and SR-16

Little to justify the drive from the island.

Hansville, Washington

caution

Door to door: About 1 h 15 min

Drive via SR-305 and SR-3 to the north Kitsap tip

Point No Point lighthouse; a long half-day.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Winslow

Walkable from the ferry: shops, cafés, the art museum and most lodging. Best for a car-free night.

Lynwood Center

South end, about 10 min by car; quieter, near the historic Lynwood Theatre.

Agate Point / north end

Closest to Bloedel Reserve and Fay Bainbridge Park; you need a car or taxi.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe for a US town; the real risks are wet, dark roads with no shoulders, fast ferry-queue traffic and cold Puget Sound water if you kayak or swim.
  • Ferry queues for cars fill on summer weekends and holidays: arrive early or walk on.
  • Island roads are narrow with no shoulders in places; cyclists and walkers share them.
  • Many restaurants and shops close early; check hours before a late dinner.
  • Cell coverage is fine, but rural trailheads have limited parking.

  • Seattle → Bainbridge ferry, car and driver: about $30 one way (check)

  2. Four walking clusters with rescue anchors: Winslow, the ferry terminal, Lynwood Center, Agate Point.
  3. Place pages with verified hours (Bloedel Reserve, the Exclusion Memorial, the art museum, Fay Bainbridge Park) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Hostile-weather and full-ferry fixtures so gates A–D can go green.
