Bainbridge Island
Go as a day trip from Seattle or one relaxed night: 35-min ferry, walk Winslow, then a garden or a park. Two nights only if you want Bloedel Reserve and trails.
Bainbridge Island is a wooded, low-rise island town 35 minutes by ferry from downtown Seattle, with a walkable main street at Winslow and the ferry terminal as its transport hub. Most visitors come for a half-day or a day; a single night buys you the Bloedel Reserve, the Japanese American Exclusion Memorial and quiet trails without the Seattle crowds.

The ferry terminal is the hub: cabs and buses meet most sailings, and Winslow is a short walk. Kitsap Transit buses (route 390 daily; 93–99 and 106 on weekday commuter runs) plus the BI Ride visitor shuttle cover the island; full fare is about $2 and part of the ORCA network. A car makes the gardens and parks much easier.

Language
English everywhere, with strong regional accents; Spanish is the second language in the Southwest, Texas, Florida, California and New York. Some words differ from British English: restroom (toilet), check (bill), gas (petrol), trunk (boot), first floor (ground floor).
- Measurements are imperial: miles, Fahrenheit, gallons, pounds. 100 km ≈ 62 miles; 30 °C ≈ 86 °F.
- Small talk with strangers is normal and friendly; it is not a sales tactic.
Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Ferry queues for cars fill on summer weekends and holidays: arrive early or walk on.
- Island roads are narrow with no shoulders in places; cyclists and walkers share them.
- Many restaurants and shops close early; check hours before a late dinner.
- Cell coverage is fine, but rural trailheads have limited parking.
Very safe for a US town; the real risks are wet, dark roads with no shoulders, fast ferry-queue traffic and cold Puget Sound water if you kayak or swim.
