Gary is a former steel company town, founded in 1906 by U.S. Steel and largely emptied out since the 1960s. What remains is a compact downtown of ruins, a lakefront park at Marquette, two casinos and the Jackson family house. It is a half-day stop from Chicago, not a base: hotels are thin, buses are limited, and the city has ranked at or near the top of US cities for homicide per capita. Go in daylight, with a car and a plan.

Getting around

A car is strongly advised. Local bus service is limited and the depot sits two blocks west of the ballpark. Downtown's four or five blocks (City Hall, Broadway, the church ruins) are walkable in daylight. The South Shore Line has two Gary stops — Gary/Chicago Airport and Adam Benjamin Jr. Metro Center, the latter near downtown — with departures at least every two hours. Greyhound/FlixBus stop at 100 W 4th Ave. Amtrak's nearest stations are in Dyer and Hammond, about 10 mi / 16 km away.
