Gary
Gary, Indiana
Day-trip from Chicago, don't sleep here: 45 min by car, 2–3 h on foot downtown, back before dark.
Gary is a former steel company town, founded in 1906 by U.S. Steel and largely emptied out since the 1960s. What remains is a compact downtown of ruins, a lakefront park at Marquette, two casinos and the Jackson family house. It is a half-day stop from Chicago, not a base: hotels are thin, buses are limited, and the city has ranked at or near the top of US cities for homicide per capita. Go in daylight, with a car and a plan.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics

Scams and watch-outs
- Gary has repeatedly ranked first among US cities for homicides per capita. Do not walk at night, including downtown.
- Many businesses close in the evening: call ahead to confirm anything is still open before you drive out.
- Abandoned buildings attract squatters. If you enter one, tell someone where you are and check in as you go.
- Some ruins are fenced or posted. A fence or a missing sign is not permission — check before entering.
- The Wynant House, a Frank Lloyd Wright design, burned in 2006 and is gone; don't plan around it.
- The Gary Post Office interior is off-limits; view from outside only.
