Golaghat is a small, low-key Assam town on the Dhansiri river, ringed by tea estates and two wildlife sanctuaries. Its draw is a cluster of Ahom-era and colonial sites plus easy access to Kaziranga's western range. Most travellers pass through in a day or sleep one night between Jorhat and Kaziranga.

Getting around

The town is small and walkable in the centre; auto-rickshaws cover short hops and taxis or hotel-arranged cars are needed for the sanctuaries, Deopahar and Negheriting. No metro or city bus network worth using. For Kaziranga, hire a car for the day.

Watch out

Safety

Golaghat is a quiet town and generally safe for visitors; the real risks are monsoon flooding and leeches, unlit rural roads after dark, and sanctuary trips arranged without a permit or guide.
  • Monsoon (Jun–Aug) brings very heavy rain and leeches in the sanctuaries; some forest tracks close.
  • Wildlife sanctuary entry needs permits and often a guide; arrange through a hotel or the forest office, not on arrival at the gate.
  • Roads to the ruins and sanctuaries are narrow and unlit after dark; don't drive them at night.
  • Carry cash: card acceptance is limited outside larger hotels and restaurants.
