Rumbek

Rumbek is a stopover between Juba and Wau, not a destination: one night if you're on the road, or skip it unless you have business or aid work there.

Rumbek is the main town of Lakes State and a crossroads on the unpaved A43 between Juba and Wau. It has a small airport, a modest cathedral and a central square. Most travellers pass through on the way to somewhere else; the town itself offers little for tourism beyond a brief stop.

  • Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
  • Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.
  • East Africa ↗Carry the yellow fever certificate on every leg of a multi-country trip: Uganda and Burundi check it for all arrivals, and a stop in Kenya or Ethiopia makes the next border ask for it.
  • East Africa ↗Advice for Ethiopia, Somaliland, Eritrea, Somalia, South Sudan and the Congo border areas can change within days; read your government's page the week you fly and before every regional flight.
  • East Africa ↗Price park, reserve and permit fees before comparing lodges: they are charged per person per day, often with VAT, and are fixed whatever bed you choose.
  • South Sudan ↗Check your own government travel advice for South Sudan before any booking; advice depends on your passport and changes without notice.
  • South Sudan ↗An e-visa and proof of yellow fever vaccination are required before arrival; permits for movement and photography have been enforced (check).
  • South Sudan ↗Confirm that your travel insurance and medical evacuation cover apply to South Sudan before you rely on it.

Watch out

Safety

Rumbek is generally calm but the security situation in South Sudan can change. Check your government's travel advice, avoid travel after dark, and keep a low profile. Medical evacuation insurance is strongly recommended.
  • Security situation can change quickly: read your government's travel advice before planning a trip.
  • Roads are unpaved and become impassable in the rainy season (May–Oct).
  • Cash only: US dollars are widely accepted; South Sudanese pounds are unstable.
  • Medical facilities are very limited; carry a comprehensive first-aid kit and evacuation insurance.
