Glenboro

One night, or a half-day stop: Sara the Camel, the museum and Spruce Woods. Sleep in Glenboro only if the park campground is full.

Glenboro is a village of about 600 people on PTH 2 and PTH 5 in Manitoba's Prairie Mountain region, an hour southeast of Brandon and two hours southwest of Winnipeg. It is a farm service centre and the practical gateway to Spruce Woods Provincial Park and the Spirit Sands dunes. Almost everything worth doing sits within a 15-minute drive, so a single night covers it; most travellers use it as a lunch-and-leg-stretch stop on the Winnipeg–Brandon run.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
  • Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
  • Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

Getting around

You need a car. Glenboro sits at the junction of PTH 2 (east–west) and PTH 5 (north–south), and the sights are spread over 10–15 km of highway and gravel road. There is no local bus or taxi service worth relying on; fuel up in the village or in Carberry before heading into the park.

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Door to door: About 20 min

Drive north on PTH 5 about 10 min to the park gate, then follow signs to the dunes trailhead

The reason to come. Open sand dunes, prairie forest and the Assiniboine River valley; start early in summer heat.

Door to door: About 30 min

Drive 12 km (7.5 mi) west of Glenboro, then north 3 km (1.9 mi), east 1 km (0.6 mi) and north 2 km (1.2 mi)

The last operating river ferry in southern Manitoba; weekday morning and late-afternoon crossings only, seasonal.

Door to door: About 50 min

Drive about 49 km (30 mi) northwest, 10 km (6.2 mi) south of Shilo

A 130-hectare heritage homestead with a self-guiding walk; little shade and few facilities.

Door to door: About 1 h

Drive PTH 2 west about 1 h

The region's real city: bigger hotels, restaurants and the river corridor.

Door to door: About 30 min

Drive PTH 5 north about 30 min

Closest town with fuel, food and a museum; pair it with the park.

Watch out

Safety

Glenboro is a quiet farm village and personal safety is not the issue. The real risks are highway driving, winter storms, summer heat on the dunes and thin cell coverage on back roads.
  • Distances are long and cell coverage thins out on the back roads; carry water and tell someone your route.
  • The Stockton Ferry runs only on weekday mornings and late afternoons in season, and closes in winter: check the schedule before driving out.
  • Prairie weather turns fast: summer thunderstorms, hail and winter whiteouts on PTH 2 and PTH 5.
  • Tick season runs late spring to midsummer in the Spruce Woods grass and dunes; check yourself after hiking.
  • Small-town services keep short hours and some close on Sundays.
