  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Yarmouth is a mid-Cape town of four villages — Yarmouth Port on the north side, West and South Yarmouth on Route 28, and Bass River on the east. It is a beach-and-base town rather than a sight town: you sleep here, drive 10–20 minutes to Hyannis, Dennis or Barnstable, and use Route 6 to reach the rest of the Cape. Two or three nights covers the beaches, the boardwalk and the historic north side.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: Route 6 runs the length of the Cape, Route 28 serves the south side and Route 6A the north. The CCRTA (Breeze) bus runs seasonal routes along Route 28 and to Hyannis; check current timetables. Parking at most town beaches needs a Town of Yarmouth beach pass from June to Labor Day; after Labor Day parking is free and lifeguards stop.

More beaches, the Cape Playhouse and a walkable village centre.

Barnstable Village

go

Door to door: 15–20 min

Route 6A west by car

Historic north-side village with a harbour and a small museum cluster.

Provincetown

caution

Door to door: 1 h 15 min–2 h

Route 6 east by car

Doable as a long day, but summer traffic makes an overnight the better call.

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Yarmouth Port (Route 6A)

Historic inns and B&Bs, walkable to restaurants; north-side beaches and Gray's Beach nearby.

West Yarmouth (Route 28)

Motels, resorts and mini-golf on the main strip; closest to Seagull Beach and Hyannis.

South Yarmouth / Bass River

Quieter, river-side; good for kayaking and a short drive to the south-side beaches.

Watch out

Safety

A low-crime seasonal resort town; the real risks are summer road traffic, rip currents at unguarded beaches after Labor Day, and ticks and mosquitoes on the marsh trails.
  • Town beach parking needs a Yarmouth beach sticker in summer; some beaches are residents-only.
  • Route 28 and Route 6 back up badly on summer weekends and holiday Mondays.
  • Mosquitoes and greenheads are heavy around the marshes and the Bass Hole Boardwalk — bring repellent.
  • Many restaurants and attractions close or cut hours from November to April.
